Sound gone on Ubuntu 16.04

Asked by G

Everything was working fine until I rebooted this morning. The only cause I can think of would an apt-get autoremove I had to do last night. I tried all the usual stuff but nothing... Stranger even, I can see the bar move in pavucontrol when I play a sound file.
I've made sure already that nothing was muted in alsamixer, tried using different speakers/headphones to rule out hardware issues... Help! :)

Here's the alsa output : http://pastebin.com/EdKp7hVM
And here's the output of the other diagnostic command : http://pastebin.com/JzX4R6UX

Thanks in advance!

Try:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.config/pulse* ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds then reboot.

first thing I tried, no change...
The bouncing sound bar is there in pavucontrol, it's very annoying :)

So, for some weird reason, I rebooted on Windows, fiddled with the settings there, and switched back to Ubuntu. I now have sound.
I'd like an explanation/link as of how it can happen, if someone has the time for this.
