Please try the solution at the end of the following thread:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/231976

This means replacing model=generic with model=auto in your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

Then reboot and retest sound output using headphones and speakers.

Then use alsamixer in a Terminal session to unmute and increase volume on all mixer channels.

Test all audio jacks at the front and the back of your PC.

Also test sound output while keeping all external USB devices (including a USB mouse) disconnected.

I tried the the auto model, but still no sound. Also, in the sound setting, now there is nothing listed under output->Play sound through. It seems that the system doesn't even recognize the embedded speaker now?
