sound suddenly stopped working - Ubuntu 14.04

Sound was working fine a day ago, and after starting computer today, no sound is heard through speakers or headphones.
Computer is up to date. Nothing was installed/de-installed/changed between the day sound was working and the next day...

Some information that might help solve my problem:

1) Following the Step 1 in the troubleshooting procedure, the code rm -r ~/.pulse*
gives an error: No such file or directory

2) when running ubuntu-support-status --show-unsupported
I get avahi, gnome-alsamixer and pavumeter among the unsupported..... which is probably the problem???
