No sound / headphones not detected on Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS

Asked by Blitva

Hello.

I installed Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (x64) and promptly lost headphones sound both in Windows 7 (on a SSD) and Ubuntu (on a HDD).
I resolved the issue in Windows by just selecting the headphones option in the Sound Blaster control panel, but in Ubuntu the problem still persists.
I have no headphones option in Alsamixer and in Pavucontrol it says they are unplugged. I tried unplugging, restarting, reinstalling Alsamixer, but to no avail. I am using Grado sr-60i headphones if that's relevant.
I am now following the recommended steps instructed here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

I am completely new to Linux so I'm feeling rather lost.
