Ubuntu 14.04 LTS No sound for user; working for guest

Asked by Ryan McKay

Sound on my user account has been not working fully or at all for the last few months. Sound is fully operational on the guest session, but only works with some (very few) embedded web videos on my user account. For example: previously Youtube worked, but no longer does and Facebook videos currently work. Tests for left and right speaker work in my sound settings and nothing is muted.

I have tried almost every troubleshooting procedure that can be found on the first page of a google search with no success:
https://www.google.com.au/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=ubuntu+14.04+LTS&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=Ow1TVqvYJ6vu8weO9LTwBw#channel=fs&q=ubuntu+14.04+LTS+no+sound

Here is my ALSA info troubleshoot output:

If there are other logs/ information that would be helpful I would be happy to provide.

Thank you for your time and effort. I have spent many hours trying to fix this myself, but have come up short.
Ryan.

Run:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.config/pulse/* ; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds and reboot

So that worked, although I didn't have any of those files to remove so I just ran killall pulseaudio, then reboot! Would you mind briefly explaining why that worked?

You just stopped the pulse process which then allowed you to delete it's configuration files. When it restarts it generated vanilla settings.
