Asked by ealthuis

After upgrade from 15.04 to 15.10, my sound has disappeared

Have not had any sound problems for a long time, now however I cannot get any sound out of my sound system. I tried the response in 273029. and got this result:

In 273378 I found Alsamixer.

I followed the instructions, and found Sound Card with two devices:

0 HDA Intel HDMI
1 HDA Intel PCH

Could not do anything to "HDMI", but opened "PCH" and set all devices to max and made sure none was muted.
Auto-Mute was enabled, I disabled with the same result... no sound

Still no sound

I also checked all connections, tried different headset by itself, all to no avail

I also studied the above info file, saw nothing that rang a bell, i.e no warnings.

Please try the solution by Steve Pusser in the following thread:

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=117835

This means creating and configuring a .asoundrc file in your home folder to change the default sound card (from HDMI to PCH) .

I also suggest playing around with gstreamer-properties after installing gstreamer0.10-alsa and gnome-media

Details are in the thread URL I just provided.

And according to this thread

http://avidemux.org/smif/index.php?topic=16271.0

the forumuser (golinux) who had the same sound issue, is using the exact same motherboard (Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3 motherboard) and the same audio codec (ALC892) as you are using.

So it should hopefully work.

Thank you Mark for your help with this problem. I now have to start eating a heaping plateful of crow...
the problem was all mine:

After trying everything I could think of, I looked up the book for the motherboard, and found that I had plugged my speakers into the Rear Sound, which worked until the upgrade to 15.10.

After plugging the speakers into the Line out connecter everything worked as expected.

I have sound on headphones, or speakers and have full control over volume.

"When all else fails, read the instructions

Thanks again Mark and Andrew for the help you provided.

Emanuel
