No sound on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Asus Z170M-PLUS Motherboard

I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on an Asus Z170M-PLUS motherboard and I am not able to get the sound up and running. According to the specifications on the motherboard, the onboard audio is stated as Realtek ALC887 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC. I have not installed any sound cards on the motherboard. The eeepc_wmi kernel module is loaded, but you are not using an Asus Eee PC .

So I recommend blacklisting it.

Blacklist the eeepc_wmi driver in the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file
by adding this configuration line:

blacklist eeepc_wmi

You can edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf using this command:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

After editing the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, make sure to save
the change.

Then reboot and retest sound output.

I plugged a set of earphones to the front audio and there was no sound.

Audio is enabled in the BIOS. These are the setting in the UEFI BIOS Utility (the available options are within the brackets):

HD Audio Controller
- Enabled (Enabled | Disabled)

Front Panel Type
- HD Audio (HD Audio | AC97)

SPDIF Out Type
- SPDIF (SPDIF | HDMI)

DVI Port Audio
- Disabled (Disabled | Enabled)

I have added "blacklist eeepc_wmi" in the /etc/modprode.d/blacklist.conf, rebooted the machine but there is still no sound from the front audio or back audio panels.

Also, I checked in the Sound settings and the Output tab shows "Dummy Output".

It was very smart of you to run the following command:

find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd

It has interesting output. It shows that the kernel module for your sound card (snd-hda-intel.ko) is not installed on your PC.

When doing a search for snd-hda-intel.ko, I see that trusty only contains the kernel module file in Ubuntu packages linux-image-3.13.0-24-lowlatency and in linux-image-extra-3.13.0-24-generic. To me, this is very strange. That kernel module should be available in all kernel versions in Ubuntu. I don't understand this.

Here is the search I performed:

It gives me the impression that you are running the wrong kernel version in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, even though it was not obvious beforehand.

I don't want you to downgrade to that older kernel version (linux-image-extra-3.13.0-24-generic).

The alternative is to upgrade to the newest mainline Ubuntu kernel (4.3.0-040300rc5-lowlatency), which also contains the snd-hda-intel.ko kernel module for your sound card.

I suggest running the following commands to install the newest Ubuntu kernel.

Make sure to install everything the script is asking you to install, including kernel headers, kernel image AND kernel extras!

This means always pressing the <ENTER> after each question.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install python-bs4 python python-all

cd /tmp

rm -rf medigeek-kmp*

wget --no-check-certificate https://github.com/medigeek/kmp-downloader/tarball/master -O kmpd.tar.gz

tar xzf kmpd.tar.gz

cd medigeek-*

python kmpd.py -d

Then reboot your PC and boot into the new 4.3.0-040300rc5-lowlatency GNU/Linux kernel.

I followed your instructions to upgrade to the latest kernel version. During the boot process, the following message was displayed:
[9.829739] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:if.3: failed to add i915 component master (-19)

However, I am not able to login to the system now. Upon entering the password and hitting "Enter", the screen sort of flickered with multi coloured lines and promptly brought me back to the logon screen.

Would it make more sense to do a reinstall then troubleshoot from the fresh installation?

Maybe your /boot partition is full, which could explain why you cannot log into the desktop anymore.

If you want to reinstall, make sure that you reserve at least 5 gigabytes of harddisk space for your /boot partition to avoid disk space issues when installing new kernels.

If you do not have a separate /boot partition, then reserve at least 10 gigabytes for your root partition....

That's what I do.

You could also simply boot into a LiveUSB session of Ubuntu 15.04 to see if sound works out-of-the-box in 15.04.

I boot into a LiveUSB session of Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS but the sound does not work OOTB. Running the following commands gave the following output:

Did you first unmute and increase volume to 100% on all mixer channels in alsamixer?

Did you test all audio jacks at the front and the back of your PC while running the LiveUSB session?

I installed Ubuntu 15.04 and upgraded all packages as prompted. After that I proceeded to upgrade ALSA following the instructions here - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS. I am happy to report that the audio is working for both the front and back panels now. Thanks for all your help. It was greatly appreciated.

On a side note, after I changed the display driver from Nouveau to the NVIDIA binary driver, I am getting some messages during the boot process:

ACPI PCC probe failed.
snd_hda_intel: 0000:00:1f.3: failed to add i915_bpo component master (-19)

Things seems to work well so far, so I think I will ignore that for the time being. Hopefully, the next version of Ubuntu will sort it all out. Once again, thanks.
