No Digital Sound Out in Ubuntu 14.04.3

I am failing to get SPDIF 2-channel (digital) sound into the coaxial input on my receiver from the coaxial output on the motherboard (ATI chip). The Pulse sound meter shows digital sound. Analog sound output works fine. Both analog and digital sound work fine in my dual boot WIN 7 OS on the same desktop hardware, an HP a1250n Media Center with a 64-bit AMD processor. I have tried steps in the Sound Troubleshooting Procedure and the Sound Troubleshooting document and suggestions from web forums to no avail. From the information below, can someone please advise me how to get the digital sound working.

Your Terminal output shows 2 sound related issues:

Issue 1)

Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 3
  Mono: 3 [100%]

This should be automatically set to 0 and not to 3 by the kernel or some other mechanism.

But there is no way to change this manually (as a user).

Issue 1 is related to the following bugreport:

Issue 2)

[ 9.488042] hda-intel 0000:01:00.1: no codecs initialized

This means that the hda-intel audio "driver" cannot find a suitable codec to use for your audio card.

So I suspect that your sound card is experiencing the following very old bug, which still does not have a solution:

Were you ever able to solve this issue, i have a very similar problem. Also does anyone know the command I need to run in the terminal to get the Terminal output shared above?
