Lubuntu, Alsa: no audio in desktop using ATI HDMI audio on gfx card

Asked by rkohoutek

Hello,

i am struggling to get Alsa audio working on fresh install of Lubuntu 15.04. The output of alsa info is stored here: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=7dfe9aec87a0cf35adf44b02e7da80acc4a4a542

User kodi is in group audio. I followed like 5 different tips how to solve this situation but with no luck.

Symptoms:
kodi@privateer:~$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:722: audio open error: No such file or directory

No volume mixer applet/control in tray.

In alsamixer settings i have selected proper soundard (default/ATI HDMI) but i have only one "Item" called S/PDIF selected and unmuted (i smell problem here).

When using Kodi.TV, i did set up audio output to Alsa and it does work flawlessly (even DTS-HD audio bitstream to my HDMI receiver works).
When using Gnome player in Lubuntu (default install) i can choose proper soundcard (ATI HDMI) and the sound is working.

Before i was forced to do fresh install i finally installed pulseaudio and pavucontrol and the sound was working excelently in desktop because i was able to select proper soundard using pavucontrol.
It seems i am not able to tell desktop environment what soundcard has to be used when there is only Alsa driver installed and no pulse audio.

Where is the catch? How comes i can't get Alsa audio working using ATI HDMI audio on Radeon gfx card?

Thank you for any advice.

Hello,
thank you for quick reply. I did modify the script you provided and ommited package 'ubuntu-desktop' since i don't want another of 400MB packages (which i don't need) to be installed.

The output of the command is pasted here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/12228981/

Status after reboot: audio in desktop is working. In Kodi i can only select PulseAudio outputs.

Unfortunatelly it's not the desired state for me (because when Pulseaudio is involved it's not possible to passthrough DTS-HD audio in Kodi).
So i am still in search of way how to get audio working using only ALSA installed on my system (for all applications).
