If you run:
alsamixer
are all levels cranked and unmuted? Use F6 to switch audio devices.
Also use the sound application in the Dash to do the same. Make sure the right device is set for the output.

Please try this procedure if the sound issue presists:
Step 1: Open Terminal
Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal
and then hit <enter>)
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
In the gedit editor, scroll down to the last lines of the alsa-base.conf
file and add these 2 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file (with
the file open inside the gedit editor!):
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=ecs202
Step 3: Reboot pc and retest sound using both headphones and speakers. Test all audio jacks at the front and the back of your PC.
Step 4: If sound is still not working after a reboot, replace the
ecs202 model option with one of the options below and then REBOOT
and retest sound output again on each audio jack at the back of your motherboard.

Thanks both for your responses !
I tested the alsamixer and it had the full levels and un-muted.
Then I proceeded doing the test suggested by Mark:
vi edited the /etc/modprobe.
Add the two lines:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=ecs202
save, close and restart.
After a new sound test, no sound.
I tested the following:
changed the line on alsa-base.conf to:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
reboot, test again, now the speakers back and front worked !, but not the microphone (front/back)
changed the line on alsa-base.conf to:
options snd-hda-intel model=5stack
reboot, test again, now the speakers back and front worked !, but not the microphone (front/back)
I tested also, with same results as above:
intel-mac-v1
intel-mac-v2
intel-mac-v3
but stopped on further test as my Mother board PC is not a Mac or Dell manufactured, it's a clone:

My issue is partially resolved, as I have sound but the microphone is not working.
I tested with:
- A pair of working speakers
- 1 microphone
- a Headset (speakers and microphone)
