14.04/14.10 sound stopped working correctly. no sound on youtube.

I have been using 14.04 for a while with no problems. Last week, after some updates sound stopped working correctly.

1. Using Rhythmbox track works fine for a random amount of time, starts freezing, then sound just goes out. Only other open app is Firefox.
2. No sound on youtube at all

I upgraded to 14.10 today hoping it would help but it did not. I'm on a Dell Vostro 200 with Realtek ALC888 integrated sound card.

Please run alsamixer in a Terminal and increase volume to 100% on the following mixer channels:

Simple mixer control 'Line Boost',0
Simple mixer control 'Line',0

Then retest sound output via headphones and speakers.

Test all audio jacks at the front and the back of your PC.

I just went into my sound settings and when testing audio, nothing happens. I have it on Analog Surround 5.1.

Update: I just upgraded to 15.05 then went into Software Center and uninstalled anything that said ALSA or PULSE under the Sound & Video tab. After reboot, I now hear the OS startup sound, testing the speakers in Sound Settings now works as expected, and there is sound on youtube, BUT it cuts in and out just as playing something in rhythmbox does...not sure what to make of this..
