Sound randomly cuts out and does not come back (except infrequently when it does)

Asked by AndrewK

As per: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Steps 1 & 2 followed, including waiting and reboots.

* sound is not muted
* speakers are connected, and known working.

* Sound worked after install, occasionally fades or cuts out. (eg when bringing a different application into focus (chrome in several cases))
* Sound sometimes comes back, but not always, and rebooting has no impact on when/if.
* in system settings>sound>output, sometimes correct output is shown, sometimes only dummy, sometimes blank (as it is right now). Sound problems exist when correct output is shown.

* desired soundcard (and only one with speakers) is the on-motherboard intel.
* System is a fresh install, with /home copied from a previous 14.10 install (I had played with alternate WMs on that install, but not on this, only using nemo as file manager (as http://www.webupd8.org/2013/10/install-nemo-with-unity-patches-and.html)). This install also had the same sound issue, but less frequently.

I have not proceeded to install the daily alsa portion.
Thanks for any help or advice.

* Desired soundcard is the HDA Intel PCH at 0xf7f10000 irq 47, to the best of my knowledge (I'm connecting to the speaker headphone jack on the back of the motherboard).

* Input works (in as much as it shows the lifecam as an input, and the bargraph moves appropriately with noise)

Ubuntu 14.10 is EOL in July this year. You may want to upgrade to Vivid which may help.

Thanks, I hadn't considered that as I am not prompted to update and http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop does not even show it for download yet. I can only find mention of it being in beta.

I'll give a go on the daily alsa build then. Should that not work, is there a better place I can go for help on this?

Ran step 3, no luck. (as a side note, running sudo apt-get install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms causes notification that you're doing it wrong and to see dkms for the correct instructions.)

Ran step 4, sound working again. Output: http://pastebin.com/s38e0Ws7

Will update again when it fails again. I'm going to continue to update here on the off chance it's useful to someone else.

Can you help with this problem?
