Step 3 at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure instructed me to post here.

Sound comes out when I plug in headphones, but none come out of the speakers. I have resolved this problem with previous versions of Ubuntu by adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. This approach does not work on this 14.04 install.

Any help is appreciated.

Exact Model of the machine is a VAIO VGC-JS25G.

I figured it out! For the record, giving snd-hda-intel the model=no-primary-hp option was the fix.

I can conclude from your Terminal output that your sound card's codec is ALC889 and that you found the correct, corresponding model option in this list:

Oliver, thank you very much for digging into this as my father has a VGC-JS4EF with same hardware, which now has working speakers!
