Sound only works from speakers after forcing standby

I had originally reported this problem on forums and http://askubuntu.com/questions/562936/ubuntu-14-04-1-fresh-install-no-sound as having no sound. I later found that sound does work through headphones, and later still found that sound works through speakers if I go into standby mode and then wake again.

This is on a Asus N550J using either 14.04 or 14.10. Please let me know what other information you require :)

Try rebooting and then running:

killall pulseaudio

Wait 10 seconds then try some sounds. Is it ok then?

If so then we can make it happen every boot.

I have rebooted once since using the hack of forcing into standby and resuming and immediately after the reboot the sound is working fine. Hopefully this is resolved, but there is obviously some bug here.
