Codec + Mixer: Conexant CX20561 (Hermosa) - card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CX20561 Analog [CX20561 Analog] - Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller 8086:293e (rev 03) - no sound output on LENOVO ThinkPad T500 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
I'm reading some pretty ugly posts about this issue, hope I have better outcome.
Installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a Lenovo T500.
No sound, started alsamixer, not sure how to make changes with it, speaker column shows empty (no colors or values).
Will read “Help” to see what I can do.
Mean while, any suggestions?

If you want to add a screenshot then you need to use imageshack or similar to make a URL of the image.
In alsamixer you use cursor keys to select and modify channels (too obvious). Use M to un/mute and ESC to exit. F6 will allow you to change the device to manipulate if the system detects multiple sound devices.

I managed to turn up all the fields and unmute everything in alsamixer.

Please use the following command to edit the alsa-base.conf file
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
Using the gedit editor, scroll down and DELETE the following two configuration lines:
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
Using the gedit editor, scroll down and ADD the following configuration line:
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_
Then save the changes to /etc/modprobe.
Then run this command:
sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo apt-get install pavucontrol linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils lightdm ubuntu-desktop linux-image-`uname -r` libasound2; sudo apt-get -y --reinstall install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils lightdm ubuntu-desktop linux-image-`uname -r` libasound2; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*; ubuntu-
Then reboot your PC and retest sound output using headphones and speakers.
Test sound output on all audio jacks at the front and the back of your PC.

Thanks so much for the help, there ain't no way I could do this without your guidance.
Did as instructed above.
No joy!
I am including the changes to the "/ect/modprobe.d/" file from after upgrade and reboot should it help.
I noticed the machine BEEPED I think four times at reboot, if that helps.
(Hey it's sound! It matters :-)).

I don't know what file or directory .pulse is in so I didn't go any further.

I'm going to close out this thread with my resolution to this problem in the event It could help others.
I fixed the audio problem by switching to XUbuntu.
It works like a charm!
