Ubuntu 13.10 has no sound after switching components to a different case.
I have run steps 1 and 2 of the SoundTroubleshootingProcedure, but still have no sound.

This is a PowerSpec 6344 computer; motherboard is Biostar P4M800-M7A; CPU is Pentium 4 521 @2.8 Ghz; Graphics card is a PNY GeForce 6200 AGP 8x with 256 Mb DDR2. There is only onboard audio.
I am using Logitech 880-000146 external amplified speakers -- they work Ok when connected to another computer with same Ubuntu 3.11.0-19 operating system.

Be sure all levels are cranked and unmuted. Use F6 to change device

Thank you actionparsnip for the response.
In the interim, I have updated to Ubuntu 14.04 Beta 2. I also tried Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 and Mythbuntu 12.04. The silence persisted through all these.
I ran alsamixer and set all Playback (F3) items to "not-muted" and levels to 100. However, when I return to alsamixer, two items are muted again: Master Mono and S/PDIF.
Within Capture (F4), there are only 3 items active: S/PDIF is at 100, Aux shows L and R Capture, and Capture is at 100.
At F6, I selected my VIA 8237 card, but when I return to Alsamixer, it goes back to "default".

I also tried steps 1 to 6 at "help.ubuntu.com/SoundTroubleshooting" as well as "sudo alsa force-reload".
Throughout all this there has been no sound from my speakers.

I began to conclude that I have a hardware issue, so I installed an old Creative Live 5.1 Sound Blaster PCI card. After a couple reboots, my speakers worked when connected to that card.
After removing the add-on sound card and reconnecting the speakers to the onboard sound jack, there was no sound again.

I think all the distros that I tried were 64 bit which should be OK with the Pentium 4 521. But is it possible that the 64 bit OS is having difficulty with the Biostar P4M800-M7A motherboard?

Using the Settings > Sound > Test Sound function, I found that my Left Speaker would announce "Front Center" when the speakers were connected to the pink (Mic or center) jack and Mode was set to Analog Surroound 5.0 Output. No sound was output from either of the other two jacks. No sound was produced from any jack with Surround 4.0 Output or with Stereo output.

Per CPU-world.com, the Pentium 521 has the EM64T instruction set and is 64 bit capable.

This Biostar board has a "JAUDIO1: Front panel audio out header."
As found there were jumpers across pins 11 - 12 (Right line in/Rear speaker Right) and 13 - 14 (Left line in/Rear speaker Left).
I moved these jumpers to pins 5 - 6 (Right line out/Speaker out Right) and 9 - 10 (Left line out/Speaker out Left).
Then I removed the PCI Soundblaster card and rebooted.
The amplified speakers worked properly when connected to the 3.5 mm speaker out jack.
