In that case, here's how I would troubleshoot:
1. Make sure BIOS is updated
2. If possible, go into BIOS and disable the audio codec. Save, reboot, and then go into the BIOS and enable the codec again.
3. Look into performing a hard reset (method varies by laptop model)

Dear Daniel, after trying your suggestion, 'Dummy output' is now gone, but replaced by something called 'Simultaneous Output' . Still no sound.

Do still waiting, hope someone would give good suggestions. I had the Dummy Output problem with 13.04 and solutions found online were able to cure it. But the same methods couldn't fix the problem in 13.10.
