my audio doesn't work after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04

Asked by Douglas

I don't know what I did wrong or If I did anything at all...I had sound before the upgrade, now it's silent/gone. the volume bar/mixer item doesn't show a slider and clicking the dashboard volume control does nothing. running alsa and the pulseaudio program didn't seem to do anything either. (pulseaudio only says 'establishing connection...' and sits for hours.) Alsa showed me some mixer bars but none were muted.

I'm running a compaq machine
3.0 ghz athena (i think)
2 gb RAM
radeon sapphire HD7750

In version 10.04 it worked fine...I hope the updater didn't remove something that worked fine.

ALSA Information Script v 0.4.61
--------------------------------

This script visits the following commands/files to collect diagnostic
information about your ALSA installation and sound related hardware.

  dmesg
  lspci
  lsmod
  aplay
  amixer
  alsactl
  /proc/asound/
  /sys/class/sound/
  ~/.asoundrc (etc.)

See './alsa-info.sh --help' for command line options.

using this script after "bash alsa-info.sh --stdout"

it did not do anything.

I know I'm doing something wrong here or I'm reading it wrong. the results I'm looking for just don't show up.
I've tried it PAST that, Step #4.

this is the output...all of it.

I think your sound card is experiencing the following bug in pulseaudio:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1122975

Please try the workaround procedure in that bugreport.

Try:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds and reboot

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

I will try this. if not I'll need to look up how to disable it on boot.

(the workaround from: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1122975)

I'll run that script in the terminal first and see how that goes. if that does not work for me, I'll need new ideas here.

the script done nothing of note. my volume is still gone. (tried it three times, same result after each reboot)

Not sure how to enable the other workaround through disabling it on startup (I'm assuming that is what was done in that question...I will try and figure out where that option is located and I shall try that)

if it does work I'll be happy to click 'Problem Solved' and go on with my life.

The bugreport states:

"The workaround I used is to disable to automatic module loading in /etc/pulse/default.pa.
It works now with the workaround."

So it should be clear where the contents/options need to be modified, which is in /etc/pulse/default.pa

Furthermore, post #3 in the same bugreport contains the modified /etc/pulse/default.pa file, showing which lines need to be commented out.

So it should be clear....

so this link is the modified file I need to use?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1122975/+attachment/3531958/+files/default.pa

will I be able to just copy / paste that and use it? because I'm a little daunted seeing a wall of text and not knowing what the F I'm doing as they both look the same. (modified version vs my system's copy)

except for these lines that are missing the hashtag

### Load audio drivers statically
### (it's probably better to not load these drivers manually, but instead
### use module-udev-detect -- see below -- for doing this automatically)
load-module module-alsa-sink <---
load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0,0 <----
#load-module module-oss device="/dev/dsp" sink_name=output source_name=input
#load-module module-oss-mmap device="/dev/dsp" sink_name=output source_name=input
load-module module-null-sink <---
load-module module-pipe-sink <----

are these what need to be edited? if so, do I add the hashtag to make those lines inoperable?

Douglas (erutrot) said :

and it won't let me save the file with the changes either.

and I meant REMOVE the hashtag not add...sorry about that.

You need to edit the file with root privileges using the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/pulse/default.pa

And this is the new text that should replace the contents where it says "Automatically load driver modules depending on the hardware available":

So you need to comment out load-module module-udev-detect and comment out load-module module-detect by inserting a # in front of those lines:

### Automatically load driver modules depending on the hardware available
.ifexists module-udev-detect.so
#load-module module-udev-detect
.else
### Use the static hardware detection module (for systems that lack udev/hal support)
#load-module module-detect
.endif

And you need to remove the hashtag for 4 of the 6 lines below for the section " Load audio drivers statically". So you need to switch from automatic loading to static loading of audio drivers:

Removing the hashtag for a certain line = activating that configuration line.

### Load audio drivers statically
### (it's probably better to not load these drivers manually, but instead
### use module-udev-detect -- see below -- for doing this automatically)
load-module module-alsa-sink
load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0,0
#load-module module-oss device="/dev/dsp" sink_name=output source_name=input
#load-module module-oss-mmap device="/dev/dsp" sink_name=output source_name=input
load-module module-null-sink
load-module module-pipe-sink

done the changes, but no effect. it lists no devices, but I can see a volume bar now. the GNOME ALSAMIXER tells me nothing is muted. everything is on, but still no sound.

Hmmmmm, I suggest testing audio output using the Ubuntu 13.04 LiveCD, when it is released.

The planned release date is tomorrow.

I'll wait for when it becomes an LTS. I'm trying 10.04, at least I have sound. but trying to play minecraft gives me a black screen now. I'm going to look around and see if someone can help me fix the black screen on loading in another forum.

thank you for your help
