Run:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
add these 2 lines:
install snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-hda-intel $CMDLINE_OPTS && /lib/alsa/
Save the new file, close gedit and reboot

@actionparsnip: you should read the page again. The fix you're proposing solves a different issue.
The issue may be that you have the wrong output selected in the sound settings. This bug sounds similar: https:/

Please first use the Terminal app called alsamixer to UNMUTE and INCREASE
volume to 100% on the following channels:
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',1
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
Simple mixer control 'Mux',0
Simple mixer control 'Mux',1
Use the M key to switch between mute/unmute states and use the arrow keys to increase volume.
MM = muted
00 = unmuted
Then retest all audio jacks at the back of your motherboard using headphones.
Please try this procedure if the sound issue presists:
Step 1: Open Terminal
Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal
and then hit <enter>)
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
In the gedit editor, scroll down to the last lines of the alsa-base.conf
file and add these 2 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file (with
the file open inside the gedit editor!):
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=macbook-
Step 3: Reboot pc and retest sound using both headphones and speakers.
Step 4: If sound is still not working after a reboot, replace the
macbook-pro-v1 model option with one of the options below and then REBOOT
and retest sound output again on each audio jack at the back of your motherboard.

Also check the "sound settings" and at section "Output" see if the "Connector" is set to "Headphones".
Check the "Hardware" section too , and see if is set to "Analog Stereo Duplex".
Thanks

Just a quick follow up.... Mark Rijckenberg's solution with setting alsamixer value on headophones to unmute helped. However... it seems to me that the there is something wrong with the switch settings... when I unplug the headphones the headphones line is still active (I can't hear it because nothing is really pluged in but I can see it on alsamixer... It doesn't really bother me, but I wonder if the headphones like shoud be set to muted when speakers are on....
Once again... help from all was greatly appreciated
