Version numbers for ALSA Library & Utilities do not match:
!!ALSA Version
!!------------
Driver version: 1.0.21
Library version: 1.0.16
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2
I did not understand what to do with:
1. One of the ALSA components was not successfully upgraded during step 1 in this procedure
2. ALSA was correctly installed or upgraded, but a wrong / old kernel was booted instead of the most recent kernel version. In that case, boot the newest kernel version (that is available in the standard/default Ubuntu repositories) and then retest sound.

I suggest performing a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS which is supported until April 2017.
Please first back up your personal data.

This desktop is my wife's and she looks unfavourably on changing to a different interface (namely, Precise's Unity). In time I will be able to persuade her. But for the moment, I need to have sound back. It used to work before a recent Ubuntu Software Update. Also, Lucid is supported till April.

Why such an ancient release?? Lucid desktop has about 5 months support left....

Andrew,
Above terminal commands worked but no change to ALSA versions:
!!ALSA Version
!!------------
Driver version: 1.0.21
Library version: 1.0.16
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2
As I previously said: This desktop is my wife's and she looks unfavourably on changing to a different interface (namely, Precise's Unity). Before April, I hope to persuade her to change. But for the moment, I need to have sound back. It used to work before a recent Ubuntu Software Update.

You don't have t9o use Unity. You can install Xubuntu and it will be the common 2 panel dskttop session. Linux is aboutCHOICE so forceing users to use the shell encroaches on this. You can also use KDE or LXDE as further alternatives. You don't have to use Gnome you know...there is more than one desktop and they will all run the same apps you like.....

My wife already uses Ubuntu Precise (with Unity) on her new laptop. Once she accustoms herself to it (before April), I can switch her to Ubuntu Precise (with Unity) on her desktop. However, I would still like sound back on her desktop in the interim.

I've now upgraded to Precise. Still no sound output. Diagnostics are:

I've just tried a clean install using Ubuntu 12.04.1 32 bit. After installing, it wouldn't boot. So I did a 32 bit boot-repair. It then booted & I logged in. I then invoked Update Manager. I chose the 100+ (or was it 200+) item update after the check. It system crashed with some stuff about jockey-gtk I think. Update manager said that I should Restart, so I did. I rebooted but I can't log in as the keyboard & mouse are frozen. Only interesting thing that I noriced is that the boot menu shows a PAE version of Ubuntu. My PC is 5+years old & has 2GB. What should I do?

I got round the 'stuck at login' by rebooting followed by selecting the recovery linux kernel. The mouse & keyboard still wouldn't workd so I moved them to different usb sockets & I could use them! All was OK (with proper restart with normal linux module) after doing the appropriate things in recovery.
I'm reluctant to use the Sound Troubleshooting Procedure (detailed in the Ubuntu Documentation) until I receive a commitment that if it makes things worse, then Canonical's staff will retieve the situation by giving me the appropriate instructions. What's your reaction to that?

BTW when ran (in Terminal) the commands specified for Step 1 (in the Sound Troubleshooting Procedure), it asked a question about gdm versus lightgdm. I selected the default of lightgdm.

Just noticed
The following string needs to be added to the /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel model=YOUR_MODEL
Checked which card
john@JudithDesk
Codec: SigmaTel STAC9227
Looked that up on http://
So added line 'options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack' at end of /etc/modprobe.

Silly me. the 'options' command fixed the problem. I'd forgot to turn the speakers on just before doing it!

One final point:
I found that if I ppa-purge audio-dev, then it lost sound on a desktop user but not on my administrative user. So I repeated step 1 of the Sound Troubleshooting Procedure and sound was back for all users.
