Hi,

Please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the
Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Using the gedit editor, add these 2 lines to the end of the alsa-
base.conf file:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=will probe_mask=1

Reboot your PC and then retest sound output using headphones and speakers.

Regards,

Mark

Is it still possible to get help on this? I have the exact same conditions as described in carrc's question: (After Quantal installation no sound comes out of the pc speakers and a very low sound comes out from the headphone jack.)

 here are my results from from running the command suggested by Marc:

To solve my problem I did this: {really I do this every time the kernel is updated by update manager :( }

cd Downloads
wget http://alsa.mirror.fr/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.25.tar.bz2
tar xvjf alsa-driver-1.0.25.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver-1.0.25
./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
make
sudo make install

<reboot>

Thank you carrc - that worked and it was really nice to get sound back. The Aspire 9500 has about the best sound I have heard on a laptop so I was very much missing it. but I suppose our configurations are not as matched as I thought because now I have a situation whereas I cannot turn down the volume or mute my built in microphones in sound settings, thus I have to keep the playback volume low to avoid feedback.

I can move the level faders but this has no effect.

I can avoid feedback by inserting a dummy plug into my mike input but it would have been nice if that had been unnecessary. Anyway sound with workarounds is better than no sound at all. Thanks again.

That is still working now for packard bell easy note MV45 (Realtec ALC260)
To avoid feedback from mic just run in a terminal:
alsamixer
and mute MIC (pressing M)
Them store configuration running:
sudo alsactl store
Hope to be usefull ;)
