Nothing at all happens concerning sound after installing Ubuntu 12.04

Are all the levels cranked and unmuted? Also if you run the 'sound' app in dash, is the correct device set as the output device?

Levels on max and unmuted = 00 under meter - except "line" which is empty.

@anders: the description of the sound issue is not clear. You sent us a lot of Terminal output, but not what you are trying to do.

There are TWO sound devices in your PC:

Which of these 2 sound devices are you trying to use?

And what exactly is the sound issue? Digital output not working? Analog output working? Headphones/speaker output not working? Microphone AND speaker output not working? The combinations are endless, so you need to clarify.

Thanks for that, I will check all options, I haven't gotten any sound at all out of the machine so far. When I use the Sound settings dropdown in the upper right corner and tested all the options with the test buttons- no sound heard. (no system sound is heard either) . I tried to record through line - no sound caught.

A question, could it be that the driver and library versions differ, is that a reason and how do I deal with that? ( I think I saw that on the net somewhere while searching?

OK, I solved it!
Interesting experience. The thing was: I have an onboard sound hardware, but since I want better latency, I am using a separate sound card, while the onboard one is disabled.

With earlier versions of Ubuntu, alsa automatically chose the active soud card, but with 12.04 it preferred the turned off one! And since the "select sound card" option isn't very prominant at the alsa mixer (dwelling in a list to the right, in dimmed blue color) I simply missed it a long time. With the right card finally chosen, I managed to find the place where I turned on PCM out, which wasn't default either. But I finally made it, maybe something to look at for further development of the mixer or Ubuntu itself?

You'd probably get lower latency by using jack and the onboard than just using an extra card.
