12.04 ATI Radeon HDMI audio issues after upgrade

After upgrade to 12.04 all audio devices have disappeared from Settings > Sound control panel. Sound can be played using headphone jack (via rythmbox) and over HDMI using aplay from the command line, but Unity applications cannot access HDMI sound devices. Before upgrading I was successfully listening to music and watching movies using XBMC over the HDMI connection with full sound control.

Here's the quick version:
* My system has a ATI RS880 - Radeon HD 4200 Series
* The Settings > Sound panel has absolutely no sound devices listed any more
* Sound plays through the head phones via rythmbox.
* Sound plays through the HDMI connected TV speakers, but ONLY using aplay. No software in unity can access the HDMI connected speakers.
* I have attempted to enable radeon.audio in the kernel with no success
* Below is a detailed list of everything I have tried. Thanks for looking!

Here's the rundown from each step:
1) added and updated suggested repositories (though ALSA driver version appears to be stuck at 1.24 even though v 1.25 downloads, unpacks and appears to install)

2) Working from the command line - NA

3) All versions are at 1.25 except for the driver version. It refuses to update even though apt appears to have updated it: Preparing to replace libasound2 1.0.25-1ubuntu10.1 (using .../libasound2_1.0.25-1ubuntu10.1_amd64.deb)

4.1) Output from step 4 can be found at ####STEP4#### below
4.2) I wish to play sound through an LG TV speakers using HDMI (Sound will play using aplay, but NO audio devices are available under Settings > Sound)

5) After many reboots, the sound issues persist as before. Sound over headphone jack, but not over TV speakers connected via HDMI. Rythm box can control the volume level on the headphone jack.

6) despite my best efforts, pavucontrol responds with:
* Home directory /home/media not ours
* Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s.
I am totally unsure how to fix this. I can't find any logs and pavucontrol does not accept many command line options (or have a verbose mode).

7) After running alsamixer I can adjust PCM, and master volume levels on the HDA ATI SB device. This allows me to manipulate headphones plugged into a jack. The speakers attached to the TV (HDMI connection) do nothing. Switching to HDA ATI HDMI only provides one meter bar: S/PDIF. I cannot change anything other than muting and unmuting this bar. I cannot adjust the volume level up or down.

8) I can hear sound through the headphones, but not through the TV speakers (HDMI connection)

9) The only OS that has ever existed on this computer is Linux

10) my user is a member of the following groups: audio, video, pulse, pulse-access, pulse-rt (I had to create this group and enumerated it to 135 as that was the next available group number). I have logged out and rebooted several times after making these changes.

11) gnome-volume-control does not appear to be available in 12.04.

12) Sound works through headphones only

13) No bios settings can be changed that relate to sound; also no settings have been changed since initial installation two years ago.

14) Alsa appears to load a driver for my card.

15) My PC is home-built with an ATI RS880 - Radeon HD 4200 Series running 64bit 12.04 PP.

16) nothing appears to be muted

aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav plays the wav through the HDMI connected TV speakers. I still do not have access to the HDMI devices in the control panel, however. Playing music through rythmbox only plays through the headphones.

Other things I have tried:
I added the following line to grub and rand the update-grub command:

are all levels cranked and unmuted?

I've discovered something very strange since submitting this ticket. I have two users on the box in question:
txoof: my administration user (has full sudo privileges)
media: a limited user that has access to all the media on the box and is available to everyone in the house

When media is logged in to X, there is nothing listed under Settings > Sound > Output. There are no devices available. The list is completely empty.

When txoof is logged into X, there are three devices listed under Settings > Sound > Output. I can see the following:
* HDMI/DisplayPort - RS880 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD4200 Series]
* Digital Output (S/PDIF)
* Analog Output

Txoof can play media in Unity and the default output goes through the HDMI connected TV as expected. Txoof can control all of the volume levels as expected and can change between output sources under Settings > Sound > Output as expected.

Media can play analog sound through the headphone jack, and control the sound volume level from within applications such as rythmbox. Media cannot adjust output source nor play anything through HDMI.

I suspect this problem might have to do with group access levels, but I'm not quite sure as txoof and media are members of most of the same groups, with the exception of admin and a few other groups that appear to be unrelated to this issue.

Txoof is a member of the following groups:
adm, dialout, cdrom, audio, video, plugdev, txoof, lpadmin, smbshare, admin, pulse, pulse-access, pulse-rt, media

Media is a member of the following groups:
audio, video, txoof, pulse, pulse-access, pulse-rt, media

The pulse-rt group did not exist until I read through the guide refferenced in the original post. I had to add that group and enumerate it manually. I do not know if that is related.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
