Hi,

My audio was working fine as of June 11th, and now is silent. I suspect that the kernel upgrade a couple days ago broke it.

All applications I have tried playing sound with, including MPlayer, mpc, aplay, and Firefox (through both Flash and JavaScript audio), seem to think they are playing audio as normal, but no sound comes through the headphone jack.

I have plugged in multiple devices (speakers, and two different pairs of earbuds), unmuted everything, and turned every volume control I can find in either xfcemixer or alsamixer to the maximum. Still no sound. But running off the Ubuntu 12.04 live CD, sound comes out just fine. So it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.

I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 with no Pulseaudio, just ALSA, with all the latest updates installed as of now, June 14th. Please let me know if I can provide any more info that may help. Thanks!

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds then reboot.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I don't have Pulseaudio running to begin with:

sf@dirt:~$ pgrep pulseaudio
sf@dirt:~$

And the "pulseaudio" package is not installed (I checked).

However, I did have a ~/.pulse directory and ~/.pulse-cookie, so I tried your command and rebooting anyway... but there was no change. I'd appreciate any further suggestions!

Please run alsamixer in a Terminal session to UNMUTE and INCREASE volume on the following mixer channels:

Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic Boost',0
Simple mixer control 'Line',0
Simple mixer control 'Digital',0
Simple mixer control 'Rear Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Rear Mic Boost',0

Especially the PCM mixer channel needs to be unmuted.
