Please proceed with the following procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the
Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

ADD these 3 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file and save the
changes:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

If the 3stack model option does not work, try each of the following model
options one by one (NOT several model options at the same time!) and
reboot+retest sound after every change to the alsa-base.conf file:

 ALC861/660
==========
 3stack 3-jack
 3stack-dig 3-jack with SPDIF I/O
 6stack-dig 6-jack with SPDIF I/O
 3stack-660 3-jack (for ALC660)
 uniwill-m31 Uniwill M31 laptop
 toshiba Toshiba laptop support

 asus-laptop ASUS F2/F3 laptops
 auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

Reboot pc and retest sound using headphones AND speakers.

Please make sure to test sound on both the internal speakers and
headphones on ALL audio ports located on the back and front of your
motherboard.
