I got to step 4... ideally, I'd like for the sound to work from the HDMI as well as the normal speaker jack, if that's possible. With 11.04 it worked with the latter but not the former.

Since you have a VIA VT1705 codec, there's a good chance that the issue has been fixed in a recent ALSA version. Install the alsa-hda-dkms package from: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/alsa-daily/+packages

I'm using regular speakers for the time being--if I had to choose, I'd pick them over HDMI, but ideally I'd like both options to work.

If you run:

alsamixer

are all levels cranked and unmuted?
Is the correct output device selected in sound options?

@Dave -- I tried updating to the more recent ALSA version--after a reboot, nothing happened.

@Actionparsnip -- In Alsa mixer not everything was cranked--but I have cranked all levels for the HDA ATI SB. Now HDMI works, but not the regular speakers. Progress!!

After Updating to the most recent ALSA version and setting the Master setting to 100 in alsamixer worked for me.
