ubuntu 12.04, no sound, dummy output, "aplay -l: no soundcards found"

Asked by Zango

A few weeks ago I installed ubuntu, and had some issues with sound but when it stopped working i could "fix it" by doing "sudo alsa force-reload" three or four times and I got the sound working. That won't happen anymore since last update.
Also, when I run the information script "bash alsa-info.sh --stdout" it says the following

# ALSA Version

# Driver version: 1.0.24

# Library version: 1.0.25

# Utilities version: 1.0.25

So driver version does not match the rest even when i just upgraded ALSA

Try:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds and reboot then try sound.

Still not working :(, I've tried pretty much anything on the internet I found about the issue. "aplay - l" still does not recognise my sound card.

Thanks for your answers

How did you "upgrade ALSA"? It looks like that's why the driver isn't loading.

Thanks to you all. i just downgraded my kernel and it went back to "normal" now i can do the "sudo alsa force-reload" and if it feels like, it starts working.

Anyway, thanks

I suggest you folks start questions or bugs of your own, or at least provide full alsa info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo
The downgrading kernel suggestion only applies to the OP, who borked his/her current kernel.
Note that some people with VIA VT8237/8251 southbridges have to use the pci=use_crs boot flag to get the sound driver loaded correctly on modern kernels.
