Running fully updated 10.04 LTS 64bit on intel core 2 duo with GIGABYTE motherboard G31M - ES2L.
Sound card -

But no sound available.

I booted with 12.04 32 bit hdd on the same system - sound played without any hiccup. So hardware is ok.

Will be grateful if someone can guide me towards the solution.

I have installed external speakers 2.1 ALTEC LANSING to the computer front panel. It worked fine with 12.04 32bit.

This is a known issue with the ALC887 sound codec.

Please run the following command in a Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

ADD the following single line using the gedit editor:

options snd-hda-intel model=generic

SAVE the change to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Then REBOOT and retest sound using headphones and speakers.

After rebooting, make sure all channels are UNMUTED and volume set to 100% in alsamixer and gnome-alsamixer

But you already gave the solution yourself. It is better to simply perform a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which is newer than 10.04 and is also a long term support edition.

Great. Sound is working fine.
But wired network stopped working after the fix.

Wireless is working on the desktop though. Any ideas?

The network thimble needed a little pressure from crimping tool on both end.
All working fine now.
Sound, email through citadel, file server through samba.
