Intel HDA suond output over HDMI no longer working

Ive just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and my sound output no longer works.

I output sound over HDMI using an Intel HDA driver.

Any assistance greatly appreciated. This is my mediacentre so I have currently lost the ability to use it.

Normally output is from mythtv but I am also using vlc for testing.

Don't know if this is relevent. Trying to run pavucontrol fails as it cannot connct. Starting pulse server manually gives this error -

start-pulseaudio-x11
Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused

However, vlc produces no audio ouput and mythtv says the Device Number 3 is unavailable (but recognises the AV receiver it is connected to).

Several random reboots and the sound is now working
