I have the same setup as you (Radeon HDMI that carries audio and video). For me it was as simple as opening up the sound manager and making sure that output was set to HDMI and not Stereo. Did you make sure that your output is set to HDMI?

Im assumining you mean System Settings> Sound. HDMI is not one of the options there. May I ask which video driver you are using? I couldn't get FGLRX to install properly and am using the default driver

Ah yeah I am using FGLRX (or whatever the proprietary driver is). Maybe that's the key?

I had FGLRX installed in 11.10. For some reason it won't install in 12.04 for me.I am tempted to go back to 11.10 or 10.04 until the driver bugs are worked out. This upgrade has been a nightmare for me on one out of seven computers.

I went back to 11.10. Installed the FGLRX Restricted ATI driver with no problem. Reboot and now have sound. After one simple click on the 12.04 upgrade button I lost my XBMC. It is now restored and working great. It appears that the Open Source driver does not support sound over HDMI very well in 12.04. My only issue now is to figure out how to turn off the prompt that keeps asking me to upgrade to 12.04. I just don't think 12.04 is ready for the "mass market"

Thanks Tyler Burton, that solved my question.
