My Sound Blaster Audigy SE doesn't work in Ubuntu 12.04
I've tried about 2 hours worth of stuff, including disabling the IE958 in gnome-alsamixer, setting the sound blaster to default device, fooling around with all the volume controls, checking and rechecking the cables. I hear a faint click in the speakers twice as the system boots, probably as the card is initialized, so the speakers work. No sound can be heard at any time from Ubuntu, neither test nor mp3 nor movie.
Now I'm working through the troubleshooter and it told me to make an entry here. The results of the diagnostic command are:

Final piece: I noticed that the ALSA drivers are version 1.0.24 while the library and utilities are 1.0.25. I tried the command recommended: sudo apt-get install alsa-hda-dkms but the versions remained the same. Is this the cause of my problems? If so, how to align the version numbers?

Audigy can be a PAIN to get working and when they do you may get issues in other apps. Do you use the onboard sound at all?

I'm not sure that I have working onboard audio on the machine. It wasn't working for me anyway. I know there are jacks, but I bought the machine surplus from a business and looking at the specs on Dell I couldn't find the onboard audio description.
I never get a device for onboard audio showing up in the mixers. I have an NVidia with HDMI output so I think one of the audio outputs is via HDMI.
I bought the Audigy because it was cheap and old technology so I though Linux would have mastered it by now :) I will return it. How can I get the onboard audio running then?
Is it an issue that my ALSA driver is 1.0.24 and the rest is 1.0.25?

Ok, I returned the audigy. Now my onboard audio doesn't work as it didn't work before. I get nothing in /proc/asound/cards.
