No headphone sound on imac 12,2 using 12.04

Here's my issue.

My internal speakers work fine and even mute when i plug my external speakers in the headphone jack. However i have no sound coming out of my external speakers when plugged in. i checked my levels and everything is fine and unmuted and the sound settings even show "headphones" in the output tab but when i test them i get nothing. at least this is a step up from 11.10 where the internal speakers would not mute and wouldn't even recognize the headphone jack. i've tried all the recommended
options snd-hda-intel model= settings and nothing. when i put in imac27 the system doesn't mute the internals and doesn't recognize my headphone jack at all.

any help would be great.

i installed Fedora 17 last night and the headphone jack worked perfectly, i didn't have to do anything to make it work. too bad fedora kept crashing on me. back to Ubuntu and still no sound...

thanks for the info but all that did was remove all my sound card info from settings. no input was available and the only output available listed was "dummy output"

i removed that line from my alsa-base.conf and now we are back to square one.

any other ideas??

Save this as fixmacsound.py, chmod +x it, then run it with sudo. You'll need to run it on every boot as root, and again with sudo if you unplug the speakers.
This file, minus the comments at the top, was made with http://www.alsa-project.org/hda-analyzer.py
It switches on the proper gpio output for the headphone jack. If anyone who knows what they are doing can tell what it would take to get a patch in to fix this properly please do. :P

Last night i installed fedora17 and to my surprise the sound from my headphone jack worked perfectly out of the box. i didnt have to make any changes. too bad fedora kept crashing on me. maybe someone can learn from what fedora did to make this work??? any other ideas??
