suddenly lost the sound. maybe an update killed something?

Asked by sally-ann barbera

One minute the sound was working, then it stopped. It doesn't even play the ubuntu tune on start up! Maybe one of the updates has downloaded something that killed it? Please help and bear in mind I am a techno numpty

Have also just found out that even the external speakers aren't working now either.

Try:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds then reboot. Any better?

Thanks for that! I didn't know about the CTRL+ALT+T thing!
I re-checked the sound settings and when I checked Output there were 2 devices installed. I clicked onto the second one and now it works! It would appear it has installed and second device and then chosen that one, all by itself! I didn't mess with the sound settings at all prior to this...weird!
Thanks for your replies.
Cheers
