Headphone jack and Laptop speakers can't be separated; using Oneiric Ocelot

Asked by Pete Heleva

When I plug something into the headphone jack, all sound is muted. That's fine for the laptop speakers, but the headphone jack gets muted, too. I can unmute the sound, but then it comes out of the laptop speakers, as well.

Just updated to 11.10, wish I had some way to fix this problem.

I followed the troubleshooting procedure from ubuntu.com, put the code in transmission and it gave me this for the drivers:

dmesg
lspci
lsmod
aplay
amixer
alsactl
/proc/asound/
/sys/class/sound/
~/ .asoundrc (etc.)

and then

Manufacturer: ASUStek Computer Inc.
Product Name: K50IJ

Help?

Continued on to the next step (updating ALSA, I guess?) and that seems to have fixed it. Thanks anyway!
