Internal Microphone not shown or listed - Ubuntu 11.10

I am running Ubuntu 11.10, 32-bit, installed with Wubi, dual-booting with Windows 7 on a Sony Vaio, Intel B940 processor.

My internal mic doesn't exist, according to PulseAudio settings and system sound settings. There is no mic listed under the Input tab. I have Alsa installed as well. There is a mic input listed under the HDMI tab, but the only other tab is the USB tab. No mic there either. The mic is fully functional when booted to Win7, and did work at one time with the same installation of Ubuntu 11.10.

My main concern is using Skype, and that's the main thing keeping me from going to a full install of Ocelot. I am a newbie with Ubuntu, but have had some experience years back with Mandrake 9.

Also be sure to run:

alsamixer

FIRST and check the mic isn't muted and that it's levels are cranked.

When I run alsamixer, I still see no active mic.

"Mic B" has red "L R" and "capture" under that, but no level bar comes up.
"Mic C" "Mic E" and "Mic F" are dashed out.
"S/PDIF" is red, green block has "00".
"Capture" is white and shows a red "L R" with red "capture" under it and a 100% bar/numeric level.
"Analog mic Boost" on the far right shows 40dB.
"Master", "PCM", and "Beep" appear to be normally indicating bars - at 100, 100 and 60%, respectively.

I came across the solution to my problem in a Skype community: http://tinyurl.com/7e3nggr

Turn PulseAudio autospawn off, normally: $ echo "autospawn = no" > ~/.pulse/client.conf
Kill PulseAudio: $ killall pulseaudio
Shut down and restart Skype

This allowed me to see/adjust the mic and all other inputs/outputs with the Alsa Mixer. My proper hardware is also indicated. Of note, there was no hardware indicated in Settings > Sound, presumably because PulseAudio was killed.
