I can not get the (inbuilt default) microphone to work

Asked by Jane Doe

I have just purchased a Asus EeePC 10.1 inch, black R011PX -notebook,
and I am not able to get the inbuilt default microphone to work.
The camera does work.
As I bought it in Portugal, the instruction manual is in Portuguese,
which I do not read.
I went on-line and found the Technical details for the Asus R011PX, and it does mention that
the notebook had an integrated stereo speakers and microphone.
As I have very limited computer skills, I have no idea how to get it working.

Could somebody please help me?

Thank you kindly

Can you give the output of:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh && ./alsa-info.sh

Thanks

thank you for answering me, actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666)

I do not know what you are asking me,
so I am guessing the following;
you want me to klik on the blue link (which I did) and it went to a new window, with lots of writing.
Do you want me to copy and past all that written that underneath here? (it is an awful lot though)
.
I am sorry, but I did state, that I know nothing of computers.

I hope I did the right thing, another window opened called a Terminal.
and I pasted the whole line:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh && ./alsa-info.sh

into that window called Terminal. It did not give me the option "upload to the server",
but instead it said:
Automatically upload ALSA information to www.alsa-project.org? [y/N] : y

so I pressed y

and then it gave me this link
Your ALSA information is located at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=4c96df825f69c8a9df2b3bb28e5d339ab21bb84c

Is that what you meant?
I hope I did the right thing.

Try:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa; sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds and reboot

Maverick is no longer supported or updated in less than 3 weeks, I suggest you abandon the ancient release and install Oneiric or even Precise which is LTS and will give the latest packages and drivers.

I do not understand any of what you just sent me,
what am I suppose to do now?

How do I get the microphone to work, there is a tiny little hole, on the top of the screen next to the camera.
I think that is the microphone, but I do not know how to switch it on.

Could you please tell me how?

thank you kindly,
Jane

Run the command the same way you ran the other command. I suggest you reinstall with Precise (Ubuntu 12.04) after the end of this month Maverick as zero support and zero updates

I ran the 2nd command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa; sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

and rebooted the computer.

then I turned Skype on, but still the microphone does not work.

"I suggest you reinstall with Precise (Ubuntu 12.04), after the end of this month Maverick has zero support and zero updates"

I assume that Maverick is the name of the microphone software????

I think I will take it back to the shop, hopefully the salesman, knows more about computers than I do.

Is the microphone broken?
It has never worked, maybe somebody dropped the computer, and it broke the microphone?

Thank you for trying to help me, sadly the microphone still does not work.

Maverick is the codename of the install of Ubuntu you have. The microphone isn't broken the OS just isn't not configured right to use it.
Try precise, see if it helps

Just to be of some help:

Oneiric is the current operating system, also known as Ubuntu 11.10

Precise is the new operating system due out on 26 April 2012.

To get one of these, I suggest 11.10,

 go to www.ubuntu.com

there you will find instructions on how to download, burn the new system to a CD or a memory stick, either of which can be used to install the newer operating system.

thank you for letting me know that, I have absolutely no knowledge of computers, but I think that is very clear.
So do I have something called Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverik) on my computer?
And after the 26th of April I have to ask somebody to ungrade the Ubutu 10.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise)?

Will my microphone work then, or will it still not work?
I find it very strange that they sell a computer that does not have a working microphone on it.
So does that mean that all the people who have bought a computer with Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverik) on it, all
have a non-functioning microphone on their computer?

I was told to ask the following question:
"Is it possible to upgrade Maverik 10.10 to Precise 12.04 without re-installing, from scratch?"

thank you both, actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666) and ealthuis (ealthuis) for being so kind in helping me.
I need to get the microphone working for Skype.

which system do I have?
do I have a 32-bit
or do I have a 64-bit and what is the difference?
what is a "bit"?
is that the speed on how fast it will work?
I only have a tiny notebook (10 inch) with only 2 GB memory and 320 Hard Drive, and it does not have a CD slot. So I need to buy a memory stick. How big must it be? How many GB´s?

I just looked at that list I was sent, and it mentions;
Kernel release: 2.6.35-32-generic so does that mean that I have a 32 bit?
Operating System: GNU/Linux
Architecture: i686
Processor: unknown
SMP Enabled: Yes

Don´t you think the salesman from the shop where I bought it, would know how to get the microphone working, or is it impossible, and I have to wait until the 24th of April, before I can Skype?

thank you both very much,
Jane

Please be patient, I will be back in a while to help.

But first press Ctl+Alt+ t,
then enter "update-manager -d" , minus the quotes

You should get the update manager screen and in the top it will most likely state that an upgrade to 11.04 is available.

Tell the update manager to update and then be patient, it will take a fair bit of time.

Ctl+Alt+t provides the Terminal into which you enter commands such as the one I described above. to stop the terminal enter"exit", no quotes

If the terminal does not respond to your command or gives an error reenter the command, but precede it with the word "sudo", no quotes, you will then be asked for a password. enter the password that was originally provided and you should get the answers the coomand you entered.

No you do not need to buy a memory stick, as upgrades will bring your computer up to date.

Upgrades are fairly time consuming, so be patient.

See if you in the available menus can find an item called system monitor, run that and one of the tabs is "system", press that and it will describe your system, including 32 or 64 bit.

Get back to this if you have any more questions. I will keep an eye on this post until your net book is up to date. You do have enough memory and disk space to run Linux.

Your current install is 32bit. There is no speed gain except in CPU intensive stuff like audio and video encoding. You only have 2Gb RAM so will not see much gain from using 64bit.

Precise is quite sturdy now and is even named on the Ubuntu download site now.

Run a backup of your user data, if you use an email client be sure to back that up too. Obviously if you use webmail this is not a cocern. Then install Precise and restore your user data, it may help.

once again, thank you both Andrew and ealthuis for helping me.

Yes! I found the "system monitor", and pressed "System", it showed me the following:

asus-1011PX
Ubuntu
Release 10.10 (Maverick)
Kernel Linux : 2.6.35-32-generic
GNOME 2.32.0

Hardware
Memory: 992.1 MiB

Processor 1: Intel(R) Atom (TM) CPU N570 @ 1.66GHz
Processor 2: Intel(R) Atom (TM) CPU N570 @ 1.66GHz
Processor 3: Intel(R) Atom (TM) CPU N570 @ 1.66GHz

System Status
Available disk space: 271.4GiB

thank you for telling me Andrew that I have a 32bit.

I do not use email client, because I do not know how to configure it, so I use Gmail and Hotmail.

About the question:
"Is it possible to upgrade Maverik 10.10 to Precise 12.04 without re-installing, from scratch?"
what is the answer to that?

Re: your advice Ealthuis:
"first press Ctl+Alt+ t,
then enter "update-manager -d" , minus the quotes
You should get the update manager screen and in the top it will most likely state that an upgrade to 11.04 is available.
Tell the update manager to update.

Will I not loose all my settings if I do that?

Re: your advice Andrew, to first run a backup of your "user data", if you use an email client be sure to back that up too. Obviously if you use webmail this is not a concern. Then install Ubuntu Precise 12.04 and restore your "user data", it may help.
Thank you for telling me this.
I did some reading up, and found out that Ubuntu Precise 12.04 is a LTS, and that means "Long Term Support", which sounds very good to me.

I will see if I can find somebody to help me copy my (user data)files, as this is a new notebook, there is not yet much on it.

Thank you both so very much. I had no idea when I posed this question, it would be something so complicated and difficult.

Kind regards, Jane

P.S. if I run into a problem, can I ask for your help again?

I have found over the years, that an upgrade is done from a current version only to the next. Having said that it may well be possible to upgrade directly to Precise 12.04 LTS. By the way a new version id offered in April and October of the year, every year. See what the update manager has to say.

To answer your question about "losing your settings" if you run an upgrade, NO you will not lose anything.

Do not try to start from scratch, use updates instead and if the update to 12,04 LTS is available... go for it.

Also if you are asked to install updates as you go along with an upgrade say yes

But remember it is a slow process, but it will complete mostly without your help.

As far as backup is concerned, there are some backup programs avilable i.e. Simple Backup, you do have to have a place to backup to such as an other Hard drive.

See if there is anything in the Home directories that you want to protect, if so then either a copy or backup to another medium, such as a memory stick or hard drive would be called for. To copy ,right click on the item and the choose "copy" again no quotes, then click on the place where you want to keep it and right click once again and then choose "paste".

Hope this helps, and yes keep asking until you are satisfied.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Jane Doe for more information if necessary.
