Ubuntu 10.04 Sound not working

Asked by Deepak Ashwani

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on Dell Vostro A840 system.

I do not know why it is showing no soundcard found after running alsa script.

See './alsa-info.sh --help' for command line options.

/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1519: No soundcards found...
cat: /tmp/alsa-info.lm2LoBb8UA/alsactl.tmp: No such file or directory
Automatically upload ALSA information to www.alsa-project.org? [y/N] : y

The sound is not working. Please help what to do for the soundcards and sound.

Thanks
Deepak

Is this a new install? Have you run all the updates?

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

I was actually using Ubuntu 11 but I do not know why suddenly sound and usb stopped working. I was listening cracking sound sometimes. I was facing this problem for a month and then I decided to install Ubuntu 8 and then upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 but still the sound is not working.

I have upgraded and installed all the updates in the system but still it shows that "No sound card found"

Thanks for helping.

Support for Ubuntu 8.04 ended last year, so it's possible only the basic files could be upgraded to 10.04.

I'd suggest downloading the ISO for 11.10  LiveCD, burn the CD, and try testing off that.  If sound works OK you could do a fresh install after backing up all your important data.  Ubuntu 12.04 is due out at the end of April and you might also like to wait for that.  12.04 will be an LTS release with extended support for 5 years, so it will get updates until April 2017.

There _WAS_ a problem with Intel sound driver modules in earlier releases, but that problem goes back about four or five years.  There should be no problems with current releases, or at least I couldn't find any.  You might have inadvertently created the problem by installing 8.04 and then upgrading to 10.04.

If there's no sound in 12.04 first look in alsamixer and set all the volume levels.  Open a terminal windows and type

alsamixer

You'll see there's many more controls than appear on the volume indicator applet and it's sometimes these 'hidden' controls that can cause no sound problems if they get set to 0 or mute.  You may find so many controls that you have to use the arrow keys to scroll the controls left or right.

Chris.

Thanks Chris for your reply.

I will possibly wait till Ubuntu 12.

But If I try to Install Ubuntu 11 using a iso live CD, do i risk my data. I mean usually I upgraded the ubuntu without taking the backup of my data.

Right now as the usb drive is also not working, what do you suggest. Can I upgrade the ubuntu or somehow USB can work on Ubuntu 10.04.

Regards,
Deepak

I checked my update manager by using Alt+F2

and then "update-manager -d"

and it says that New Ubuntu release '12.04 LTS' is available. Should i go for upgrade in march considering that its support will be in April?

12.04 LTS is still in beta 1. It has beta 2 and candidate release milestones still to pass before the stable release. Anything can and will happen during beta testing including a broken install or upgrade. If this is your only machine then I would not recommend upgrading to 12.04 at this stage, at least not without first downloading the 11.10 ISO for the LiveCD, burning it so that it's bootable, verifying that it boots and works, and also doing a backup of all of your important data.

I'd recommend you do all of these steps in any case. An upgrade to 12.04 at the end of April may not fix the problem and you may have to download the new ISO and start from scratch in any case.

I don't like recommending on line upgrades where there is no other means of recovery if things don't work out as expected.

Chris.

Try:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa; sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-iquik/alsa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade;killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Then wait 10 seconds and reboot. Personally I would upgrade to Precise as others are saying.

Can you help with this problem?
