sound card not recognized

Asked by Eric Hensal

I was following the steps outlined here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure. I originally was having trouble hearing the left channel.

when I ran step two, my problem became worse and I lost all sound and the system doesn't even know there is a sound card.

My goal is to get my headphones and desktop speakers working. In addition, I want to make sure the microphone is working for Skype calls and the like.

Thanks in advance.

i don't understand what to take

What things look like to me is that this card is not being recognized, like somehow I whacked a bunch of files

2012-02-07 00:44:14 (62.6 KB/s) - `alsa-info.sh' saved [27247]

cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory
grep: /proc/asound/cards: No such file or directory
cat: /proc/asound/cards: No such file or directory
cat: /proc/asound/modules: No such file or directory
grep: /proc/asound/cards: No such file or directory
/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1519: No soundcards found...

how can I go back to scratch to get this card recognized?

Well the command is installing the package, so remove bot occurrences of the word..

both what? I really don't know much about how to fix this...any idea what command lines I should enter to do what you are suggesting?

sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils gdm ubuntu-desktop linux-image-`uname -r` ; sudo apt-get -y --reinstall install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils gdm ubuntu-desktop linux-image-`uname -r` ; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*; sudo usermod -aG `cat /etc/group | grep -e '^pulse:' -e '^audio:' -e '^pulse-access:' -e '^pulse-rt:' -e '^video:' | awk -F: '{print $1}' | tr '\n' ',' | sed 's:,$::g'` `whoami`

Run that. LITERALLY all I did was recopy the command and delete the word 'libasound2' as the package doesn't exist (as you said). It's not a technical thing, it's removing 2 occurrences of the same word from a list of words. A child could do it. A simpler example is thus:

blue phone shop orange red blue pen

the word 'blue' is causing an error (just like libasound2 in the command) so remove both blues would leave:
phone shop orange red pen

Its the same principle. Just delete the word....

sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r` linux-generic

Code:
E: Unable to locate package linux-restricted-modules-3.0.0-15-generic
