Low-quality audio output with bad echo

I'm experiencing poor audio output. I am generating output through analog Logitech desktop speaker system plugged into my motherboard, although the problem persists when I use headphones. I have not tried digital HDMI output.

Streaming audio is mostly fine except for when it ends; then there is static and echo/repetition. Playing any audio that is stored on my system results in extreme echo/repetition and lots of very loud static. I would like a clear audio signal output; your help is appreciated.

Wait a few seconds and try a sound app. May help. Is sound ok in the Oneiric live CD/USB?

Nope. =(

I went through the rest of the Sound Troubleshooting steps, but not much else seemed to apply. Lots of stuff geared towards no-sound-output problems.

Can't remember if all that output above features the entirety of the hardware specs, but this box is badly frankenputered with a mobo built for an APU holding onto a CPU chip and then a cheap PCI graphics card running the display. I'm nearing the point of despair here, and might just have to get a new one-or-the-other.

 and rebooted and there is no change.

I can parse the commands you're giving me a little bit, but would you mind adding some english to the mix? I'm still learning my way around the command line.

I'd like to know what I'm copy/pasting into my terminal. I have this list of things I've tried already, but I'm just not familiar enough with it to effectively communicate what I've tried to anyone else who's asking. It's totally my fault for not being very well-versed yet, but a guy's gotta learn somehow, right?

The alsa driver version you have is old and can easily be upgraded with those PPAs. This often fixes things. It's ok to not be conversant with your OS, it's a new thing to you.

Is there a hardware switch or toggle to modify volume?

If you run:

alsamixer

are all levels cranked and unmuted?

I ran the commands to upgrade the alsa driver, and then went back and ran the command series from the SoundTroubleshootingProcedure to check the output. The driver version remains at
Driver version: 1.0.21
Library version: 1.0.24.1
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2

So no change.

One thing I haven't done is updated my BIOS version on this mobo. Haven't been able to get past the fact that this MSI board will only update through a proprietary .exe, as far as I know. Sorry if it wasn't clear before now, but all of this only started after I put new hardware together. Could this be a firmware/hardware issue?
