Cant activate speaker in Gnome (LTSP-related issue)

Hi

Working with a medium sized Edubuntu deployment of thin and fat clients and ran into a tricky problem.
Help appreciated..

Problem is we need to use the internal speakers of the clients but I can't find any way to have it enabled by default.
This could possibly be related to the blacklisting of some devices in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf due to bugs #77010 and #246969 (?) Haven't digged deep enough to tell yet...

So pulseaudio is fine, alsamixer is fine, BUT the second channel on the first device ("Master mono" in my case) is muted and can't be unmuted on the thin/fat client unless you physically go to the client, run alsamixer in the terminal, unmute it and crank up the volume.

Everything that should do the trick in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf or /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf is ineffective. It seems whatever parameter i put in it defaults to, well, the defaults...

When I try to use gnome-control-center - sound - output: its not possible to set the output to speaker. (It reverts back to the standard output immediately)

Ideas? Am I going in the right direction messing with /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Additional question: when editing lts.conf do I need to restart/reload the nbd-server for changes to take effect? I always assumed that wasn't necessary.

Also:

Clients vary, but all but two kinds have internal speaker.
It is only the hardware (In our case HP/compaq D5s and D51s) using Intel8x0 that are affected by 'Master Mono Playback' beeing muted as default

In our case all other hardware (HP dx5150mt and others) isn't affected since they hook up the internal speaker differently to output. (and thus does not rely on Master_mono at all)

I just found out that the fat clients doesn't honor ANY setting related to sound in lts.conf at all.
(Applies to all of the machines, not only the i845 / intel8x0 ones)

I will run tests on our development server today as well as a standalone test with a fresh install, "off grid". Have now gone through all FAQ:s applicable and googled for similar problems in two days but came up with nothing :(

Worth to mention, even if I can't see it should have any impact, is that the servers we use lack any form of soundcard.
