Expected: linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.0.0-15?

Asked by Sylvain

I use this ppa which solved some choppy video and audio issues with Poulsbo HDA Intel.
Recent upgrade of kernel (3.0.0-14 -> 3.0.0-15) reintroduced the problem. I was trying to update linux-alsa-driver-modules accordingly using `sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)`, however "Unable to locate package linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.0.0-15-generic".

Weren't you using this ppa?
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=oneiric
Because if you do, then you have the same problem I do. It seems that the Ubuntu Audio Dev team does not provide modules for the 3.0.0-15 kernel. AFAIK the only thing that you can do is to keep the 3.0.0-14 image installed (or reinstall it if you removed it) and set GRUB_DEFAULT=1 in /etc/default/grub to automatically start the older kernel.

Q: Weren't you using this ppa?

A: Oh, yes.

Notes: And the kernel is now 3.0.0-16.

The only machine I have is an usually annoying one: 751h from Acer using the Poulsbo chipset. I was using the PPA which solved errors in the playback of video and audio files (or maybe it is just an error with audio files which has an impact on the playback of video files). The unexpected effect, as I experience it, is that 1 second of the file is skipped about every second of playback.

I use xubuntu, and, generally speaking, the support for Poulsbo has been lacking, with reason, during the years I used linux on this machine (first ArchLinux, then Ubuntu, now Xubuntu). But, honestly, I never had much troubles with audio files, rather with videos. When I installed from the PPA everything, audio and video, would work up to my satisfaction, and maybe better than ever experienced it. Then came kernel 3.0.0-15 and I lost all sounds (but video would be smooth again, albeit silent). I uninstalled alsa, tried everything I could reasonably try as suggested by Sam_ (and-sam), but did not manage to make it work.

The status, after upgrading the kernel to 3.0.0-16 is that which I described: video is choppy again (probably due to problems when playing back the audio) and no matter the source I listen from (mp3 from HDD, songs from Grooveshark, etc.) the sound is choppy.

Thanks. I guess the problem is solved.
