try:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait a few seconds then try some sounds.

Hey Ian,
Please open terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+T and copy and paste the following command
uname -a && sudo aplay -l && lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio"

this command will ask you for your password, type it in and press enter. Please note when you type your password in terminal you will not see it as you type, this is normal.

Please copy and paste the output of those commands here for review.

Now please run the following command found at this link under 11.10
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
Copy and paste that entire command into terminal and press enter, then reboot and test your sound please.
