sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring

Will import the key for the medibuntu ppa.

Do you want the sound out of both at the same time? What is your sound?

Try:

sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo apt-get --reinstall install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils libasound2; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Then try sound.

okay so since, i tried this : sudo dmidecode, to see if the card is recognized in bios
I'm quite positive that everything's okay

Also, i took a look at the sound settings and the only device there is the " dummy output".... Yeah that says a lot.
Otherwise, i forgot to tell that i upgraded from ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 yesterday.
At first, i only had sound with the headphone, but even then it was so bad you could barely discern a word less to say a sentence. Since then i've been prowling on internet in search of a solution, probably managing to make things way worse in the process.

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #8

also i ensured that nothing is muted, and i did :

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio
sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install alsa-base
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install sound-indicator
reboot

still no sound ! sucky situation

If you run:

alsamixer

is that how you checked the levels?

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #10

yes, i did check the levels via alsamixer earlier
but since the sound-card disappeared on me all i get is this :

charlotte2@charlotte-laptop:~$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #12

thanks ! sooo (i'm kind of afraid to make another huge mistake..) i have to write :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
 <device>
  <match key="input.x11_driver" string="synaptics">
   <merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">True</merge>
  </match>
 </device>
</deviceinfo>

in the terminal ?

Or i am to focuse on this : sudo apt-get install pulseaudio ? yeah, i suck big time ! sorry !

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #13

or this :

sudo aptitude install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

that might be, i've never tried sth quite similar

You need to add the code to /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi

The guide says that...

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #15

so i need to add the code (this one right :)

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
 <device>
  <match key="input.x11_driver" string="synaptics">
   <merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">True</merge>
  </match>
 </device>
</deviceinfo>

to /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi

which is right where you lost me. I don't understand how to proceed
I assumed i was to type /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi in the terminal, but i received :
bash: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi: No such file or directory

past that attempt i don't know how to reach /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi: No such file or directory
i'm quite weak when it's about computing

gksudo gedit /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi

Add the text there

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #17

thanks for the advice ! I've done it, then i restarted the computer. But the sound isn't working whether i use the speakers or the headphones

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #18

Also i don't know if that helps but; i just took a look in Sound -> Settings
- in Hardware, there is no device
- neither in input
- output shows Dummy output

otherwise i re-did aplay -l
aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found...

I think that the ALSA driver is not loading, because you are using an invalid model option in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save.2 file:

charlotte2@charlotte-laptop:~$ sudo grep model /etc/modprobe.d/*
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save.2:options snd-hda-intel model=oqo

I suggest deleting the following files by running the following command in a Terminal:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save.1 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save.2 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.save /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.save

After deleting those files, please run this command:

sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils gdm ubuntu-desktop linux-image-`uname -r` libasound2; sudo apt-get -y --reinstall install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils gdm ubuntu-desktop linux-image-`uname -r` libasound2; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*; sudo usermod -aG `cat /etc/group | grep -e '^pulse:' -e '^audio:' -e '^pulse-access:' -e '^pulse-rt:' -e '^video:' | awk -F: '{print $1}' | tr '\n' ',' | sed 's:,$::g'` `whoami`

Then REBOOT and resend us the output from step 3 and step 4 in the following procedure:

i just rebooted, and the sound is back !! well sort of, it is atrociously jerky (so no way to listen to anything really), but hope is back and that's already sth !!

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #24

when i'm on youtube for instance, a couple words make it through. But there is really just no sound when i watch a movie (vlc). Also no sound whatsoever when i turn the computer on/off

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 0: ALC269 Analog [ALC269 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

so it appears that the sound-card is back, right ? But now, i don't know what's wrong with the computer anymore.

Your sound issue seems related to the following bugreport:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/825709

I believe the bug affects all Atom CPU chipsets using this audio chipset:

Audio device: Intel Corporation System Controller Hub (SCH Poulsbo) HD Audio Controller (rev 07)

Please try this procedure:

a) Copy-paste the following command into the terminal and hit <ENTER>:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

While the file is open in the gedit editor, add the following 3 lines to the end of the file
after "options snd-pcsp index=-2"

options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

b) Save change to file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf , reboot and
retest sound using headphones AND speakers

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #26

thank you so much mark for your help ! Indeed the sound is back with the speakers and the headphones, only it remains extremely jerky

Charlotte (juhel-charlotte) said : #27

actually it's not quite that. Earlier, while watching a movie, i had no sound or barely, but the image was perfect and the movie running smoothly.
Now, well the sound is much more present, but still quite jerky. And the whole movie plays jerkily.
So i was thinking that's linked ? Like a problem with vlc maybe ?

I suggest running the following command WHILE listening to music or watching video in different applications (mplayer, xine, vlc, kaffeine, ...) that are playing jerky video or experiencing stuttering sound:

top -n 5

Wait each time for the command to finish processing (before sending the Terminal output).

Please send the output from this command for each different application that you tested.

This top command might help us reveal which process is gobbling up all the CPU time.

Please also read this:

http://wiki.videolan.org/Common_Problems#Poor_Quality_Video_and_Audio

Try disabling power management on the sound module, may help

Again thank you !! your help is precious !
