Default Setting of Sound Cards in "Sound Settings...."

Asked by Navin Talati

I need your guidance in setting the SOUND. When I go to Sound Setting window, it show the Hardware being detected as fololowing TWO devices
(1).RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200] 1 Output, Digital Steareo (HDMI) Output
(2).Internal Audio, 1 Output/ 1 Input, Analog Stereo Duplex.
Selecting (1), only “Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output” profile is available and it does not give any sound output while activating “Test Speaker” but when selecting (2), it gives positive response while test speakers in all profile options. So naturally (2) is preferable selection. But when I close the winbdow and reopens it, autometcally the (1) gets selected. In short the Hardware at sr.no (1) remains selected as default. Under this condition HOW TO SELECT option (2) AS DEFAULT ?
Because of this reason, I am unable to play any audio as well as deprived of pleasent Ubuntu's Login Sound. Please Help & Guide.

Output of “sudo lspci -v” command in terminal indicates following TWO Audio Devices. And I think they BOTH are detected as above (1) & (2). detail specifications are as under. My speakers' are simply front type and not HDMI.

Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. M4A785TD Motherboard

Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 16

 Memory at fe8f4000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2

Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

 Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200]

Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. M5A88-V EVO

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19

 Memory at feaf4000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3

 Capabilities: [a0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+

Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

 Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

Please help in getting the solution.

On 'Hardware' tab it just displays what's available, either internal or external connections.

You need to select in tab 'Output' which sound card to use. It'll keep the selected one after closing preferences, at least here it does.
## Actually there is no need to select manually, it selects automatically the one which works or rather is connected.

To test the 'Output' tab, you could open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
and play a file:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

To replay the file just press the arrow-up key and the command will be repeated.

As per your above guidance, the results are as under:
In the sound settings window, the "Hardware" tab shows the TWO configured devices in which RS880 Audio Device remains selected as default whereas in "Output" tab it shows both devices but remains selected in default is "Internal Audio Analog Stereo".
Now the Terminal output as per your suggestion is as under:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
navin@navin-System-Product-Name:~$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wavPlaying WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
navin@navin-System-Product-Name:~$
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Why the Login Sound is not played?
Please guide.

Does it mean you could hear this playing
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

but login sound not?
Are event sounds activated in sound-settings?

To apply and test settings in more detail maybe install gnome-alsa-mixer and pavucontrol.

Do you mean "Event Sounds" means "Sound Effects"(i.e. Default, Bark, Drip, Glass, and Sonar) to be choose as an alert sound in Sound Settings..? If it is the case, Default is usually selected. Yet the Login Sound is not coming.

Make sure nothing on the first tab in sound-settings is muted.
Event sounds is the term which dconf in
org.gnome.desktop.sound
and
/usr/share/gnome/autostart/libcanberra-login-sound.desktop
use.

To exclude user misconfiguration, login to guest-account or create a test-user account to verify if login sound is played there.

Please advise me about How to login to guest-account or create a test-user account to verify if login sound is played there?
Kindly state the required command lines if necessary.

Kindly provide Ubuntu release.

Since Oneiric there is a guest-session available on login dialog.
On others go to account settings create a new user and login.

Also have a look into ~/.config/autostart if there is a file 'Gnome login sound', if not there it should be at least in /usr/share/gnome/autostart.

Can you help with this problem?
