Ticks and pops from the speakers of my laptop when the speakers are muted and the laptop is operating on battery

Asked by Gene Bray

Recently, I received an e-mail describing a way to report irritants with Ubuntu.

The gist was there are problems which to not necessarily rise to the level of bugs but nonetheless impact the overall experience of using Ubuntu adversely. Well, I cannot find the e-mail (probably deleted), and I have not been able to locate anything googling. I have one of those irritants and want to report it but do not think it rises to the level of a bug.

The very short version of the issue is ticks and pops from the speakers of my laptop when the speakers are muted and the laptop is operating on battery.

The problem is significantly better on AC but does not completely go away.

OS is Ubuntu 11.04 patched current.

Noticed on all kernels since the release of 11.04.

Do not recall this on 10.10 or 10.4.

If someone could please let me know the best way to formally report this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your help.

Run:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

add this line:
options snd-hda-intel power_save=0

Save the new file and reboot
