How do I make a fresh user? Do you mean, log in as a different person or guest user?

sudo adduser foo

Then log in as foo as the password you set, you can change foo to something else if you like. Eg:

sudo adduser andy

Then log off and log in as the new user

Set-up and tried as new user. Tried to play samples in Example folder on Movie Player and Banshee. Checked Program Volume and system volume levels to be sure they were not muted or turned down. Still no sound.

Also: for the past few days I am getting a pop up message
Backup Failed
volume doesn't implement mount

Please use alsamixer to unmute and increase volume on the following mixer channels:

Simple mixer control 'Master Mono',0
Simple mixer control 'Line',0
Simple mixer control 'Aux',0
Simple mixer control 'Mix',0
Simple mixer control 'Mix Mono',0

They are currently muted on your PC.

Downloaded alsamixer
unmuted Master mono - Line & Aux still no sound
Only controls showing for Mix & Mix Mono are blank check boxes next to their names.
Should I place a check in these boxes?

Also noticed that a box for External Amplifier is checked. So I unchecked that and Bingo !!!
That completed the picture. Thank you very much. You really made my day. And Thanks to all who helped me out with their input and suggestions.

But one other question before I check the "Solved" button.
Previous versions of Ubuntu would play a music file simply by placing the curser on top of the file Icon. That function is not working and was wondering if it was eliminated in 11.10 ?
