No greeting sound in 11.10

Asked by William Pabon

Is this a problem or is it configured that way? I don't hear the welcome sound I'm used to in the other versions of Ubuntu. Please advise.

Please check whether the audio jack is giving output or not. test the speakers from the sound settings menu by clicking the test speakers tab under the hardware menu. if they are working fine, then go to startup programs and check whether "GNOME LOGIN SOUND" is enabled or not.

Murali:

Everything that you suggested is OK. I get the Skype greeting sound without problems. I also get the other sounds that are available in the sound preferences dialog (y'know, the bark, default, drip, glass, sonar). Yes, the login sound is activated on my start up programs.

Just to inform that the sound file is in the system (/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login.ogg), but it doesn't play at login.

go to startup up programs again and select the gnome login sound and hit the edit tab. in the command input box the content should be /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login" . Make sure that it is correct.

The command input is correct, exactly as you say above. I even tried to play the sound from a terminal and this is what I get:

williepabon@WorkStation-670:/usr/bin$ sudo canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"
[sudo] password for williepabon:

(canberra-gtk-play:2332): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",

(canberra-gtk-play:2332): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",
Failed to play sound: File or data not found

As I said before, the sound is in the system and I am able to play it with a player, but still it doesn't play in the login process. Thanks for your help.

I still have the problem. I can use the command above (/usr/bin$ sudo canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login") to play the login sound on my other machines and it works, but not on the machine that I have ubuntu 11.10. Help.
