No sound after installing Ububtu 11.10
I've recently installed Ubuntu 11.10. After doing so I have no sound on my PC. No system sounds, no sound via any media or on the internet. I'm using a headset with mic - I have no speakers connected, as I only use my headset for sound. I have run through all the standard set up routines to ensure that nothing is muted in the ALSA mixer or the preferences in the sound control in the top panel. I have a Logitech USB webcam with a mic attached to the system. The mic works on this camera. I checked to be sure that the camera was not interfering with my normal sound card by removing it and retesting my sound, however this made no difference.
I'm in the process of running through the sound trouble shooting routine and have reached that point where I've run a diagnostic, which has been uploaded to the ALSA project website. The directions in the routine asked that I copy the URL for my upload and paste it here. http://
I'm ready to continue with the trouble shooting procedure and would really like some help

First issue:

The root user is hogging access to your /dev/snd devices.
Normally, only your own user account (marvin) should be accessing these /dev/snd (sound) devices.
Please kill the processes related to the arecord application that is currently running in memory.
Only the access to /dev/snd/controlC1 is fine.

Second issue:
Please use alsamixer to unmute and increase volume to 100% on the following channels:
Simple mixer control 'Surround',0
Simple mixer control 'Center',0
Simple mixer control 'LFE',0
Simple mixer control 'Side',0
These channels are currently muted.
After fixing both issue, please retest sound output.

In sound settings, is the soundcard set as the output device? If you run:
alsamixer
are all levels cranked and unmuted?

Hi Andrew and thanks for your response. By default the alsamixer only has the Master Front, Headphone, PCM, Front, and Front Mic unmuted. I have cranked all those fully.
As an experiment I expended the panel, fully, then unmuted and cranked everything else. This had no apparent effect. I have since returned the panel to it's default state, with the following exception. I noted that under view F4 I could open another portion of the mixer that gave me access to additional controls. I opened that area and noted that, capture (LR) and capture (LR) are active and cranked. Digital is set at 60<>60. Input source was set to rear mic, which I have now changed to stereo mixer and I turned on independent.
I only did this as an experiment after running through all the directions in the troubleshooting guide. This is something I did on my own and is not part of the trouble shooting routine. I intend to reboot to see if anything has changed as a result of these alteration to the mixer settings. If nothing has changed I will reopen the mixer and put all those settings back as they were.
Here's an important note: Before installing 11:10, I ran Puppy Linux, Puppy Linux Lighthouse and Ubuntu 9.04. The sound worked perfectly and immediately both from the live CD and after installation with each of these distros. None of the hardware was changed before installing 11.10, the sound chip is exactly the same chip as are all the other components.
Further, I also have a Logitech webcam connected via USB. This camera appears in the sound control panel and the mic works perfectly when tested. I've connected by headset via the front and rear jacks but have no sound output or mic function on either.
Finally. When I boot the computer while wearing the headset I hear a brief loud cracking sound, then silence.

Hello again and thanks for your ongoing help. Regrettably I still have a problem with my sound. On 2011-11-11
Mark Rijckenberg (markrijckenberg) offered the following advice., on two issues he found. I've pasted his comments below.
As to the second issue, I can unmute that channels as suggested. However as to the first issue, his recommendations are over my head. I'm a Linux novice and has such have no idea how to kill the "processes related to the arecord application that is currently running in memory." I'm curious to know if this was intended as a permanent fix to the problem or simply a stop gap method of fixing things on each session?
If you read my other comments, you will note that I have run other distros on my system including puppy linux, puppy linux lighthouse and an earlier version of Ubuntu (9.4 I think is the correct release) The sound worked with each of these earlier distros.
This tells me that something has changed in the code of 11.10 that is preventing it from working with my HDA Intel VT1708bsound chip.
I've assumed that there is a core issue here that goes beyond unmuting channels in the alsa mixer. For the record, I've unmuted channels as recommend and it made no difference, with one exception. When I fist boot the system, I hear a loud cracking sound in the headphones just as the Ubuntu login screen appears. After unmuting all the channels in the alsa mixer that cracking sound became louder. However, I still have no sound from any source and no input from the mic using either the front or rear jacks.
Is it possible that during the install the program simply doesn't load the drivers from my sound card?
Following are Marks earlier comments for reference.
First issue:
/dev/snd/controlC0: root 919 F.... arecord
/dev/snd/controlC1: marvin 1581 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: root 919 F...m arecord
/dev/snd/timer: root 919 f.... arecor
The root user is hogging access to your /dev/snd devices.
Normally, only your own user account (marvin) should be accessing these /dev/snd (sound) devices.
Please kill the processes related to the arecord application that is currently running in memory.
Only the access to /dev/snd/controlC1 is fine.

Second issue:
Please use alsamixer to unmute and increase volume to 100% on the following channels:
Simple mixer control 'Surround',0
Simple mixer control 'Center',0
Simple mixer control 'LFE',0
Simple mixer control 'Side',0
These channels are currently muted.
After fixing both issue, please retest sound output.

Yes, this is possibly a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.
Please copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:
killall pulseaudio; sudo killall arecord; sudo alsa force-reload; sudo /etc/init.
Then retest sound output.
