No sound Gateway 2000 after 11.10 install

Asked by kinkajou45

Steps taken: 1) Multiple Clean reinstalls 11.10/updates and follow Ubuntu trouble shoot guide: no sound desktop speakers or internal speakers. 2) Clean installs of Jaunty, Karmic and Natty: no sound with earlier OS versions. This date re-ran trouble shooter still no sound. Would prefer sound output from desktop speakers, access to mike for use in VOIP applications. I have not altered BIOS . I noted in diagnostics "cat: /proc/asound/hwdep: No such file or directory" and "Cannot stat /dev/dsp: Bad address". All other programs in Ocelot running beautifully!
Question: Can you assist in resolving this sound issue? Should I follow instructions as given at http://alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-via82xx-modem? I have never compiled modules.

Thank you.

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:

                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: carol 1573 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC1: Slmodemd 942 F.... slmodemd
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0c: Slmodemd 942 F...m slmodemd
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0p: Slmodemd 942 F...m slmodemd
sl-modem-daemon: /usr/sbin/slmodemd

I think you are experiencing this issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/394500/comments/40

The slmodemd process is hogging access to the /dev/snd devices, which should NOT be the case.

I believe the slmodemd process is trying to control your modem, which is the following:

card 1: modem [VIA 82XX modem], device 0: VIA 82XX modem [VIA 82XX modem]

You need to find a way to disable this modem, maybe by using the Hardware Drivers manager and deactivating the modem there. Then reboot and retest sound after disabling the modem.

Or you should try disabling the modem in the BIOS (if possible).

Hope it helps.

So it is good news that you followed step FOUR in the sound troubleshooting procedure. Most people forget it, but it is important as well ;-)

Couldn't disable modem from bios and can't find a hardware device manager tool similar to Window's. Card is onboard unit and I can't remove it. Is there anything I can change in the configuration file to cause the sound card to gain ascendancy?
Is there a terminal command that would act like device manager to whack the modem?

Please try the following command:

sudo apt-get remove sl-modem-daemon

Then reboot and retest sound output.

Since last night I've disabled the modem in bios-installation/fresh install, reverted to default bios-installation/fresh install, reset bios with modem disabled, blacklisted modem in blacklist and alsa conf.
I managed to get sound back in the bios, so I know the hardware is working. The slmodem daemon isn't to be found, probably because I disabled the modem in the bios. I'm in the process of doing updates and following the troubleshooting guide (again).

I've also opened the box to take a look at the via chip. I don't dare try to physically manipulate it. This is infuriating because I have 11.10 installed on 3 ancient desktops and two other elderly laptops and Ocelot is performing flawlessly on those (Compaq, Vaio & Sony desktops, Dell and Ivo laptops).

I'm posting the current aplay & lspci. All thoughts welcome-this looks like a proprietary issue with this particular machine model/manufacturer. As long as I haven't physically trashed the machine, I can always do a clean install. X(
