What is the sound issue exactly?
Revision history for this message
|

Your Terminal output shows the following info:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
So make sure that sound output (if this is a sound output issue and not a microphone issue....) is sent to the first playback device (STAC92xx analog). If you send the sound output to the Si3054 modem, you will not hear anything.... Disabling the Si3054 modem may help.
Also mention how you want to generate sound output: analog output via desktop speakers, digital output via an HDMI connection to the TV, via headphones, etc ...
You sent us a lot of info, but not what you are trying to achieve here.
At the moment, I am guessing that your sound output is getting misdirected to the wrong ALSA playback device....

Gateway 6839 laptop. Sound Card SigmaTel_STAC9250? First noticed after updating Ubuntu when no microphone sound on Skype version 2.2.0.35. Checked to make sure that the Logitech external C250webcam was picked up on sound settings and that nothing was 'mute'. Everything worked fine on 11.04.

Please try this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal
Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal
and then hit <enter>)
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
In the gedit editor, scroll down to the last lines of the alsa-base.conf
file and add these 2 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file (with
the file open inside the gedit editor!):
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=m1
Step 3: Reboot pc and retest sound using both headphones and speakers.
Step 4: If sound is still not working after a reboot, replace the
m1 model option with one of the options below and then REBOOT
and retest sound again.
STAC9202/9250/9251

Well Mark here goes:-
CD using Banshee Media Player works on speakers and headphones for all apart from m2-2 and auto BIOS. There is no sound on reboot after signing in to desktop loading-should that be? Also as a senior citizen I keep in touch with my son in Holland using SKYPE which using the test call facility works for m1-2 and m5 unfortunately on the playback my voice sounds like a cartoon chipmunk!!
Your help has been invaluable to me. Any more hints/help would be appreciated.

The issue with the high pitched voice in Skype is probably linked to the Skype service itself, not to Linux or ALSA.
Please read this:
http://
and this:
https:/
and this:
https:/
The best way to find out if the high-pitched voice thing is purely a Skype issue, you should try an open-source voip client and test sound input and sound output using that. If there is no issue with the open-source voip client, then you know Skype is the problem....
If you continue to have problems with Skype, please create a separate question for that, as that was not the original question in THIS thread.
You can create a new question via this URL:

I have the same problem with gnome-alsamixer in Ubuntu 11.10.
gnome-alsamixer does not start up for me as well.
I believe it is linked to the following bug, which is not solved yet:
https:/
There are actually several different bugreports open for this problem.
